Bao-Bao Falls in Surigao del Sur: The Story Behind Its Name

Have you heard of the captivating Bao-Bao Falls in Surigao del Sur? Nestled in the heart of this scenic province, Bao-Bao Falls is one of the hidden gems that makes Surigao del Sur a must-visit destination in the Caraga region of the Philippines. Whether you're an adventure seeker, nature lover, or someone searching for a tranquil retreat, this unique waterfall has something for everyone.

Discovering Bao-Bao Falls

My first trip to Surigao del Sur was during the pre-pandemic era. Like many travelers, I was mesmerized by the stunning Britania Islands, known for their pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. (You can read about my experience and other top places to visit in Surigao del Sur here).

I thought I had seen it all. But my recent trip to Surigao del Sur opened my eyes to another facet of its natural beauty: the charming Bao-Bao Falls. Tucked away in a serene setting, this waterfall offers a refreshing escape, far from the hustle and bustle of city life.

How Bao-Bao Falls Got Its Name

The name "Bao-Bao" intrigued me. In Bisaya, "Bao" means "turtle," and when repeated as "Bao-Bao," it often suggests resemblance or replication. Naturally, I was expecting the falls or its surrounding landscape to resemble a turtle in some way. However, I found no such likeness upon arrival.

Curious, I asked a local resident about the origin of the name. According to the local folklore (take this with a grain of salt), the rocks around the falls once resembled a giant turtle's shell. These rocks were believed to signify the presence of gold in the area, leading miners to break them apart in search of treasure. Unfortunately, no one could confirm if gold was ever discovered.

What Makes Bao-Bao Falls Unique?

Unlike towering, multi-tiered waterfalls, Bao-Bao Falls is a single-tier waterfall with a modest height. But what it lacks in grandeur, it makes up for with its natural charm and serene environment.

The rocky surroundings make it easy to navigate closer to the falls. The water is deep near the base of the waterfall, so swimming skills are a must if you want to take a dip. However, there are shallow areas perfect for families and non-swimmers to enjoy the clean, refreshing waters. What stood out to me was how the water temperature was just right—not too cold, making it even more enjoyable to swim and relax.

Accessibility and Visitor Amenities

Getting to Bao-Bao Falls is surprisingly easy. A short 5 to 10-minute hike along a concrete stairway leads you to the falls. The trek is beginner-friendly, and the pathway is well-maintained.

For those planning to spend the day, there are several cottages available, making it a perfect spot for picnics or group outings. Basic amenities like comfort rooms are also provided to cater to visitors' needs.
